This week's topics of interest:

1. Both the P90X3 and Focus T25 Challenge Packs are on sale during the month of January. Both are $180 (over $90 in savings). Links should be live tomorrow (January 2nd). E-mail me if you are interested in either one. Challenge Packs offer tremendous value, not to mention getting Shakeology into your diet to start the year off right!

2. Speaking of Shakeology. There are 3 supplements that I take, that if someone asks me my go-to supplements, these are the 3. Creatine, Whey Protein, and Shakeology. Remember that Shakeology comes with a "Bottom of the bag guarantee," so even if you aren't a fan, or don't feel as though it made any difference in your life during your 30 servings, you can return it for a full refund! How many products back up their reputation like that? Do yourself a favour and give Shakeology a shot. Start the year off with just 1 bag. Give it an honest try for 30 days, with regular exercise, and let me know how you feel after you're done. Make sure to order on "Home Direct" to get free shipping, you can cancel at ANY time, no penalties.

How effective is P90X3?

I came across this article a few weeks ago, and have been excited to share it with all of you. With the hype and excitement surrounding the release of P90X3, not to mention my own vlogging of my progress through the program, I have yet to get a chance to write about this important bit of information. However, now is as good of time as any, as many of you will be starting X3 soon, or will be contemplating starting in the near future. Inevitably, I will be getting numerous questions about the "effectiveness" of P90X3.

Before we discuss the study's findings, let's have a quick discussion on how the body operates. Keep in mind that this is a very brief synopsis, and if you have any further questions, make sure to comment below or e-mail me (t.robbins.fitness@gmail.com) to discuss things in greater detail.

Everybody consumes food. Food contains macronutrients (proteins, fats, carbohydrates), and micronutrients (vitamins, minerals, nutrients). Food gives us energy, which is generally measured in calories (kilocalories, actually).

Your body needs energy (calories) to function. Thinking, breathing, walking, digesting food, building tissues, talking, having sex, etc. All of these daily processes and the energy needed to function are known as the basal metabolic rate (BMR). Although there are great variations in individuals' BMRs, most people average around 1500-2000kcal/day. This number varies greatly beyond this baseline based on how much fat-free mass you have (muscle), not to mention your activity level, types of foods you eat, how stressed you are, what type of occupation you have, genetics, etc. Basically, there are so many factors involved in calculating exactly how many calories you actually burn in any given day, that being attached to any specific number is an estimation at best. Sure, you can try and ballpark the number of calories you use in a day, but do not think that this is all that accurate.

The way your body uses energy is based on your level of fitness as well as what type of activity you are performing. Low-intensity activities such as walking (for most people) is relatively easy to accomplish, and is considered "aerobic" because the body can fulfill the energy demands through oxidative metabolism.

Body fat (adipose tissue) can only be used as an energy source when oxygen is present. So, if you respire fast/quickly enough, and your heart can pump blood to your working muscles efficiently and effectively, then the more "fit" you become, and therefore more efficient your body becomes at utilizing body fat stores (adipose tissue) as a primary energy source. What a lot of people seem to forget, is that the "fitter" you become, the more effective your body becomes at using adipose tissue (body fat) as a primary energy supplier, lowering your body fat percentage with less "effort."

Anyways, back to calories. Too many individuals become very attached to counting calories. I definitely recommend that my clients track their food intake from time to time to get a basic idea of exactly how much they are eating, and in what macronutrient ratios, but don't believe that this is something that is sustainable for most people, nor is it the most accurate.

I also try and point out the fact that the number of calories that your heart rate monitor tells you that you burn during a workout should not be something that should be stressed over either.

Despite all of that, this question will be raised time and time again, as I have already been asked a number of times since programs like P90X3 are out on the market. "How many calories are you actually burning during a P90X3 workout?"

Back to the study.

"While other low volume HIT protocols have reported non-significant (Burgomaster. 2005, 2006) or small (below 10%) increases in aerobic capacity (Burgomaster. 2008; Hazell. 2010) the current protocol induced rela- tively large increases in both VO2peak (+19%) and an- aerobic performance (+12% - 14%). These findings con- firm the results of Tabata et al.(1996) who reported ele- vated VO2peak at both 3 and 6 wks of training, and demonstrate that increases in VO2peak occur following 2 wks of training. Interestingly, while VO2peak is traditionally believed to be determined by cardiac output, a recent report demonstrated increased VO2peak without an accompanying increase in maximal cardiac output following treadmill sprint interval training (MacPherson. 2011)."

So what does this mean? Well, basically, something that I have stressed time and time again. Short bursts of intense exercise is very effective at keeping you "fit" and improving your VO2Max. VO2Max, basically, is how effective your body is at utilizing oxygen. As we discussed earlier, the more efficient and effective your body is at utilizing oxygen, the harder, faster, and more effective your exercise and everyday activities can become. Not only that, but your body then becomes a far more efficient machine at burning body fat stores as a primary energy source, lowering your body fat percentage.

The study had participants using Tabata-style exercise, which is a form of HIIT (high intensity interval training). The study subjects completed 4 workouts per week, each consisting of 4 minutes of exercise (8, 20 second intervals, 10 second break between. Total time = 4 minutes). Yes, you read that correctly. In just 16 mins of exercise every week, these individuals improved their VO2Max, but maybe more importantly for many of you, they also had an increase in mitochondrial protein.

If you remember back to your high school biology days, mitochondria are considered the "power plants" of your cells. They have a number of functions, but the function that is most important to those exercising, is the production of energy through aerobic means.

So, with intense exercise, your body becomes more efficient at burning body fat as a primary energy source, leading you to be more effective at everything else you do throughout your day, burning more body fat during every other activity that you are doing.

The name of the game is intensity, however. You need to be pushing yourself extremely hard during the intervals of work. This is one common problem that I see with many individuals, especially when it comes to shorter P90X3 workouts. If you reach the end of a 30 minute workout and feel as though you have "more in the tank," then you simply did not intensify enough.

The style of P90X3 workouts is such that it focuses on power and performance training. Power refers to contracting a muscle as quickly as possible. In the Agility X routine, for example, every single movement should be done as fast and as powerfully as possible. Power training is about going from point A to point B as quickly as possible.

Too many people miss this opportunity and believe that this routine is just a "cardio" routine, so they can just follow through the motions. Instead, every single agility sequence, every single jump, every single movement should be done with as much force and power that you can muster. If you are not exhausted by the end of the 30 minutes, then you need to jump with more force, move with more purpose in the agility sequences, etc.

If you do this, 30 minutes of exercise is more than enough time to get a tremendous workout in, improving your aerobic efficiency, keeping you "fit", and allowing your body to maintain a much healthier body composition.

Hey Everybody

Wow, what an opening day for P90X3 yesterday! I know for a fact that the Team Beachbody website is still reeling after the amount of traffic it saw yesterday. Things should be better today for those of you who had troubles ordering yesterday. The initial rush should be slowed down now, although there is still going to be a HUGE demand in the coming days/weeks/months!

I want to personally thank all of you who not only purchased (or are going to purchase) P90X3 through me, but any other purchases you make through me as well. That is how I make a small return for the hard work I put forth helping all of you stay motivated, accountable, and in my mind, the most important part (and one fact that a LOT of Coaches miss) - educated on everything health and fitness!

With the holiday season underway, or almost underway, we now start to look ahead to the New Year and the goals/improvements we all wish to make. I know for a fact that I am going to be chomping at the bit to get going with X3, so I will more than likely start it as soon as it arrives - hopefully no later than December 22nd. Yes, for those of you asking, I will be doing LOTS of video updates along the way.

Let's cover this week's topics:

1. If you tried to order P90X3 yesterday and were bogged down by the website, make sure you try again today. There should be a lot less traffic now that the original rush is slowing. Please remember, if you did NOT receive a confirmation order and e-mail at the end of your purchase yesterday then your order probably did not go through. If you are uncertain, let me know and I will check my records to see if your order went through. Here are your P90X3 purchasing options.

2. Make sure you check out all of the latest news about P90X3. Yesterday I added the various training schedules as well as the workout sheets - a good idea of what you're in for!

3. If you are still mulling over what P90X3 option to get, let me convince you on how great of a deal the P90X3 Challenge Pack is. You get the Base Kit, your first month of Shakeology, a free 30-day trial membership to a Club Membership as well as the option to upgrade to Coach status for free ($39.95 value). For those of you interested in not only that, but also joining my 60-Day Coach Training Academy, let me know as my next class starts on Monday January 6th 2014. It is a great way to learn the ins and outs of the business and hit the ground running.

4. If you haven't already, make sure you check out our P90X3 Challenge Group. This one will be rockin' with excitement/motivation in the coming weeks as everyone gets their copy of X3 and gets ready to do battle. We're currently sitting at 25 members strong!

5. One of the best reads about Crossfit you will find!

My next 3 weeks of training

A real quick post detailing what I plan on doing for my final 3 weeks prior to starting P90X3. I am continuing with my mass/strength gaining theme. Lots of recovery time, but a lot of heavy lifting on working days. This may seem very different than what many of you are used to, so ask any questions if you find anything concerning.

My off/recovery days will be used to either completely rest, or do some light yoga/stretching if I am feeling stiff.

Sunday December 1st - Saturday December 21st

Sunday - Hockey
Monday - Workout 1
Tuesday - Off/Recovery
Wednesday - Workout 2
Thursday - Off/Recovery
Friday - Workout 3
Saturday - Off/Recovery

Workout 1

5x5 Back Squat
5x5 Bench Press
1x5 Deadlift
Body Beast Bulk: Chest

Workout 2

5x5 Front Squat
5x5 Barbell Row
3x8 Good Mornings
Body Beast Bulk: Back (no deadlifts)
3x5 Turkish Get Up

Workout 3

5x5 Back Squat
5x5 Overhead Press
Diamond Delts

One glaring omission to many of you is the fact that I do not have a single, dedicated leg day. Well, that's because I am squatting 3x/week. I will be using the back squat on Mondays and Fridays and the front squat on Wednesdays. This will vary where the load is placed on my body so that I will activate muscles slightly different each time.

You may also notice a lack of "core" work. Again, with squats, deadlifts, and overhead presses, my core will be gaining PLENTY of strength. Just for good measure, however, I will be adding some Turkish Get Ups on Wednesdays.

No "isolation" work here (biceps, triceps, etc.) as my triceps will get worked on chest day, biceps will get worked on back day. I will be moving plenty of weight to work both of those muscle groups.

Heavy squatting, as well as deadlifting works wonders to increase production of testosterone and growth hormone to grow my muscles. That is one advantage to having squats 3x/week. I also need more recovery time between workouts to allow for proper recovery/tissue re-building.

This then gives me a week of recovery/light workouts prior to starting P90X3 on Sunday December 29th.

Team Fitness for Life Home Gyms

Lately I've been discussing the benefits of working out at home, and I have even shown you my own home gym setup. I put the word out to my Challenge Group for anyone interested in sharing their home gym to send me pics, so that my readers can get an idea just how versatile and unique people's home gyms can be.

Not only that, but understand the dedication involved for many of these gyms to double as other functions in the home. One of the themes or goals of my blog lately, has been to show people that almost anyone can find a bit of space in their home to exercise. The great thing about working out at home, is that even though you may not have a multi-million dollar facility, you also don't need to pay to rent their equipment. You can build your own gym over time and build something great!

John S.

Here are a few photos of my gym - just in a small spare bedroom (no I didn't choose the awesome paint colour and wallpaper!). Started with just the resistance bands for p90x in 2011-12 and a pull up bar (have since upgraded to beachbody pull up system). I purchased the med balls, gymnastic balls, and SelectTech 552s in Dec 2012 to have ready for X2 in January. Just added the SelectTech1090s and bench this week! All in about $1400 but thats just 2 years of gym membership here and I will have it all forever! Also have a fan, and the TV has built in DVD player, use the black bookshelf as a tabletop to "Write it down"

Jeff T.

Here is my workout area. Nothing special. I did all of Insanity/Asylum vol 1 & 2 in my living room. Then moved everything else outside when I started P90X

Jason T. (Part 1)

I'm 6'4" so I need quite a bit of space to maneuver around. Our old living room was too cramped so I moved the kitchen table back and sort of worked out between the kitchen and computer room in the hallway. Trust me, there were plenty of times I cracked my hands and head on those low overhangs you see there lol.

Jason T. (Part 2)

Here's my (current) basement setup. As much as I hate to say it, I'm planning on replacing that awesome orange carpet with some rubber flooring soon. Hopefully early next year.

Dan M.

Sister's old room. Bowflex bench, Power Blocks adjustable dumbbells, EZ curl bars, and workout mat.  Very steak and potatoes.

home_gym_dan.jpg

Brenda M.

My home gym is my living room so I need a system where it can be tucked away easily. Everything is in my living room except the pull-up bar and chin-up assist.
Inventory: dumbbells (2, 5, 10, & 15s), medicine balls x4, resistance bands x6, agility ladder, rumble roller, roller, TV, DVD player, Audio player, yoga mat, push-up stands, Insanity, Asylum Volumes 1&2, P90X, P90X2, Power 90, 10 min. Trainer, TurboFire, T25, T25 Gamma. not pictured - pull-up bar (for doorway) and chin-up assist. I  also workout at least 2 times per week at work! There, it is a classroom, DVD/projector and a yoga mat!

home_gym_brenda.PNG

Brent G.

I workout in the 3rd car garage area of my house. I love it in this room. I have a large rug for cushioning and my TV is an old one with a built in DVD and VHS player. My other gear includes stability ball, bowflex select tech dumb bells, a couple free weight dumb bells, homemade medicine ball, yoga mat, ab roller, and the pull up bar hangs in the door frame. This room also holds all my other "toys". You can see my skis and my bicycles hang up behind the main picture.

Greg H.

Fridge has water bottles & shakers ready for pre workout & post / recovery shakes .
A Years worth of workouts already to go, beside the TV,
Love my garage, man heaven !

Robert G.

Here is my area. I think it's taken me like 4 years or so to get all the equipment I have. I still need to buy some heavier weights but maybe next year. Oh and I remember trying to sell the TV I use for the longest time but glad I never did.

Andrew B.

I started into fitness about 12 years ago.  I was overweight so I got a treadmill.  After losing a lot of weight it was time to bulk up.  For that I got a bowflex.  When I progressed beyond that I started to lift free weights.   Recently I have been getting into Beach Body programs to add dynamic training to my workouts.  This was a good excuse to buy a lot of fun equipment (pull up bar, bands, medicine balls, etc...).

Gary W.

Larry N.

Another interesting tidbit about my home gym that my wife and I put together. We actually met in a commercial gym, training at 4am. I figured anyone dedicated to their workouts like I am is worth dating! We are still together 17 years later!

Scotty C.

My home gym doubles as a living room. I had to modify the pull-up bar because my door frame is wider than all pull-up bars on the market, some PVC pipe, foam covering to ensure that it doesn't destroy my door frame and tape to hold it all together. Bowflex 1090's, 1 rumble roller, 1 foam roller, 4 medicine ball, 2 stability balls, a bench, resistance bands, e-z curl bar with 2 35's, 2 25's, 4 10's, 2 5's, and 2 2.5's, Tony Horton PowerStands, yoga mat and jump mat, I use both for yoga, because yoga mat on carpet doesn't work, and an Indo Board.

Scott N.

I converted one of the guest bedrooms into my home gym. It's a gradual work in progress and it gets the job done. Buddha's there for encouragement:)

Hey Everybody!

I love this time of year. My birthday is coming up (Monday November 25th), the holiday season is right around the corner, my son's birthday is on December 6th, my wife's birthday is on December 16th, the air is colder, etc. I just love winding down the year with holiday traditions and spending time with family and friends. We may or may not also be one of those crazy families that already has their Christmas decorations up...I am a big kid, so be it!

This time of year tends to be a major motivation-suck for so many people though, especially when it comes to health and fitness. I know for a fact that I have the next few weeks already planned out in my training, but not everyone is the same.

Admit it, you will be eating those extra treats and skipping your workouts more often than not during this time of year. If you are, not all is lost, however, as there are tools to help you get back on track at the start of the year, including my P90X3 Challenge Group. If P90X3 isn't your thing, make sure to plug into my Team Fitness for Life Challenge Group. There, we have a huge group of dedicated folks pushing play, staying active, and motivating each other regardless of their program or current fitness level.

Topics of interest this week:

1. A real quick update on P90X3. Tony posted a short video giving you a little glimpse into "Agility."

2. Beachbody has overhauled the Shakeology website and will launching it this Thursday November 21st. Make sure to check it out! I have seen it already and it's awesome!

3. My next 60-Day Coach training academy starts on Monday December 2nd. The timing of this course will be perfect, because it will allow you to gain the basics of Coaching before not only P90X3 launches, but also prior to the "New Year's Rush" of people looking to make a change. If, however, the month of December is too scattered for you, I will more than likely be starting another Coach course on Monday January 6th. Let me know if you're interested. I am even open to video chat with any interested participants looking for more information into this incredible opportunity!

4. Make sure you check out one of my latest blogs from one of my Coaches (Brenda Merritt). Brenda broke down her own cost analysis as to what she spent on working out at home over the past seven years, and compared it to what she would have spent if she had been paying for a gym membership. The savings are pretty remarkable...

Hey Everybody

If you are interested in doing the program yourself, and want the motivation of a Challenge Group, join us here.

2. A real quick heads-up. My next Beachbody Coach Training is slated to begin on Monday December 2nd. I have had a ton of interest for this training already, and am already starting to plan ahead for yet another group to start on Monday January 6th, so if either of these dates sound appealing to you, let me know. December is a good time to start because you will already have a month's worth of training under your belt prior to the health and fitness rush at the beginning of the year. On the other hand, if you wish to start 2014 off with an exciting new business opportunity, then that option is open too.

3. Here is a good laugh for you (in case you missed it from Facebook). I am sure this is what people think of when I tell them I workout at home...

4. Great article from Men's Health Magazine - 4 Exercises Trainers Hate.

5. Another great article, this time from the Business Insider - 9 Lies About Fat that Destroyed the World's Health.

6. This week's blogs:

The best time to workout is?...
INVESTING in your health!
"But what do you do for cardio?"

7. And from the blog archive:

Build Muscle, Lower Body Fat
Pull-ups/Lat Pull-downs Hand Positions
Resistance Training for Runners
Sign of Overtraining
My Thoughts on Crossfit

And 2 favors that I ask:

1) If you like the hard work I put into writing my blogs and videos, PLEASE help me out by sharing them.  Click the share links below them and share them on FB, Twitter, etc.  It really helps me get more exposure and grow our team!

2) Also, as always, remember that the way I benefit from being your coach is that I earn a commission from any Beachbody products that you purchase, as long as you buy them through my site, tylerrobbinsfitness.com. It helps with the amount of time I spend answering all your questions, writing my blogs, filming my videos, and helping you out. Thank you! I really appreciate it!

Everyone have a great week!

Weekly Newsletter

Hey Everybody!

Well some very exciting personal news to get out of the way right off the bat! My wife had her second ultrasound this morning. The baby is healthy, which is awesome news! We also found out that we are having another boy! I better keep working out the way I am so that I can keep up with my 2 sons...holy smokes!

We are almost into November. Are you planning on finishing your year strong, or just limp towards the finish line as we head into 2014? Why do so many people think that they can just coast at this time of year and just "start fresh" in January? I can tell you right now, from my experiences with "Coaching" and personal training, the people who need a specific date to start something (i.e. January 1st) NEVER reach their goals. Your body and your health don't know what day it is, besides the fact that you just keep getting older. Stop procrastinating and get to it NOW.

Enough of the serious talk ;-)

Lots of exciting things to cover this week:

1. I have already had an amazing amount of interest for my 60-Day Coach Basics Training program, starting on November 4th. I have been hard at work taking the training material passed down to me from some of the top Coaches at Beachbody, including 2011 and 2012 TOP COACH, and my personal Coach, Wayne Wyatt, and organizing it into a comprehensive 60-Day training program. I have also been modifying some of the topics and adding my own input based on what I have had success with as a Coach. You will not only learn how to start and run your business, but also other nuances like making YouTube videos, websites, blogs, etc. I have all sorts of tips and advice to pass down to my team. So, if you have been considering becoming a Beachbody Coach, now is the time to do it, as you can hit the ground running with this training program. Let me know if you're interested.

2. I had another video chat with Google the other day, getting my "Helpouts from Google" listing all set up. This sounds like it's going to be a remarkable opportunity. I will be able to give folks help with their health and fitness problems via video chat for a small fee. What's nice about all of this, is that all of you get to pick my brain and get advice whenever you want since I am your Beachbody Coach. That will not change! In case you still don't know what Google Helpouts is all about, head on over to my blog about the opportunity, including Google's official trailer detailing the program (expected to launch first week of November).

3. Just over a week left to take advantage of Beachbody's October promotions - P90X and P90X2 Challenge Packs on sale for just $180, which is over $90 in savings. Remember, if you have been thinking about becoming a Coach and partaking in my 60-Day training course, any customer who purchases as Challenge Pack has the option of upgrading to "Coach" status for free!

4. Make sure to check out the latest course in P90X University. A comprehensive breakdown of Chest & Back.

5. We are already sitting at 19 members for my P90X3 Challenge Group! If you are at all interested in starting 2014 off with the latest program from Tony Horton himself, join us!

And 2 favors that I ask:

1) If you like the hard work I put into writing my blogs and videos, PLEASE help me out by sharing them.  Click the share links below them and share them on FB, Twitter, etc.  It really helps me get more exposure and grow our team!

1. I have just given my website a bit of a facelift. Nothing too major, just a few cosmetic changes here and there to freshen up the appearance a bit. Let me know what you think!

2. I have been invited to be one of the founding members of a new service from Google called "Google Helpouts." For those of you who know me will realize that this holds a lot of potential for me, especially considering how much I have enjoyed helping so many of you online these past few years. I will release more details about this endeavour as they are made available to me, so stay tuned!

Weekly Newsletter

Hey Everybody!

Exciting news from me this week. I announced on my Facebook page the other day, although I realize not all of you use Facebook, that now, I have officially become a full-time Beachbody Coach and Personal Trainer. I have been working very hard towards this goal, and I have all of you, along with my wife to thank. Of course all of my team members helped me get to this point, so I would like to thank all of you for your support, especially the outpouring of support lately! My wife has been adamant about me doing what I enjoy, so I am taking this step to do just that! So, I will be working, as a personal trainer at a local gym, also personal training clients on-location, and when I am not helping people that way, I will be working my Beachbody business, helping all of you.

It makes for a very busy schedule, but I really enjoy helping others, especially by sharing my knowledge on the health and fitness industry. I think I have made this pretty apparent, especially lately, and hope to keep all of your support as we move towards P90X3 and beyond!

This week's topics of interest:

1. Remember to join my P90X3 Challenge Group. As I am writing this, we are sitting at 13 members and continuing to grow...and the program doesn't even come out for 2 more months! Studies have shown that working out in a group setting helps individuals stay motivated, and although we will be working out at home, it is great to have that "group mentality" online to motivate you to keep pushing play!

2. Don't forget that both P90X and P90X2 Challenge Packs are both on sale this month, you save over $90! Great way to maybe pick up a program and/or Shakeology for someone as a gift for this holiday season. Don't forget that when you purchase a Challenge Pack, Beachbody will waive your $39.95 Coach sign-up fee. You can become a Coach and sell P90X3, which I have no doubts, will become one of the top-selling home workout programs of all time!

3. Make sure to check out the latest class at P90X University - The Science of P90X: Progressive Overload.

4. In case you were wondering, this is the hybrid schedule I have started this week and will continue leading up to P90X3!

And 2 favors that I ask:

1) If you like the hard work I put into writing my blogs and videos, PLEASE help me out by sharing them.  Click the share links below them and share them on FB, Twitter, etc.  It really helps me get more exposure and grow our team!
