How effective is Shakeology?

As soon as I watched this video at Beachbody's Coach Summit 2014, my eyebrow was raised. This video, or should I say "trial", just reeked of marketing to me. Now for anyone who follows me or has been on my website, you should know that I am a Team Beachbody Coach. I have been since October 2012. Not only that, but I have been an avid Shakeology user for close to 2 years now, and have even had my wife on it for the past few months.

So, before some of you decide to get mad about what I have to say about this video, realize that I am an objective person. I always have been, I always will be, as is my wife. We are both what you would consider "scientists," although my wife definitely takes that title more than I do. I have my B.Sc. in Biochemistry along with my CSCS certification. My wife has her Ph.D in Molecular Genetics. Naturally, whenever a health or fitness-related science "study" piques my/our interest, I always present it to my wife so that we can have a good old fashioned science debate at the ol' Robbins' house...I know, we're lively!

Anyways, so why do we take Shakeology? Well, I started taking it because I couldn't find any worthwhile studies relating to whether or not it worked. Since starting, I have found that I really enjoy taking it. Although not everyone is a fan of the taste, I love the chocolate Shakeology, and consider it my daily "treat." There is a good dose of protein in each shake (more when I mix it with milk). I love the pre and pro biotics in it, especially in the past 6 months or so. I have had a few bouts of strep throat where I have needed to use antibiotics. Antibiotics kill bacteria, even those good ones in your intestines, but I have found that I have had absolutely no problems while drinking my shakes. I enjoy using them as a meal replacement (breakfast). I honestly do feel like I get an energy boost from drinking them (which is handy when you have young kids in your house!).

My wife has been taking the Shakeology for a few months now since our second son was born. She too enjoys using it as a meal replacement (breakfast) because it keeps her feeling full until lunch. She has been consistently losing weight. She likes the taste of the shakes. She also finds that she gets a boost in energy from them. And like me, her tummy has been happy like mine!

So...even though we both drink Shakeology, why the problem with the video? Well, let's break things down. Check out the video for yourself first:

Ok, let's dive right in. Beachbody went and hired Medicus Research to conduct their clinical trial. Clinical trials can be effective, but oftentimes, results or findings can be biased based on the sponsor paying for the trial. In this case, Beachbody themselves hired this company to conduct this study. I believe that this increases the chance of bias or conflict of interest.

Not only that, but I can't seem to find any publication or summary of the trial that was conducted (if anyone can find something, please let me know). It would be nice to read the breakdown and procedure of the trial rather than just getting a quick summary in a 3-minute video that spits out numbers so that we can examine exactly what is taking place in this study.

Instead, I would like to see a peer reviewed study on Shakeology. For those of you who are unaware, peer review is effective because other equally qualified individuals can examine and critique a study, and decide whether or not the results support the conclusions.

Anyways, back to the video:

0:33 - 50 individuals were selected through a "rigorous selection process." 50 participants in this study is a decent sample size, although it voids some validity of the study due to the findings (will explain later). Here is a prime case of wishing there was some sort of publication for this study. If the participants of the study were rigorously selected, it would be nice to know what the criteria were for those selected. Were they smokers? Were they overweight? Were they obese? Were they on medication? Do they exercise? There are far too many variables here to list.

On top of that, effective scientific studies have what's known as "control" participants. In other words, you need a group of participants who don't take Shakeology at all, and study them in the same way for the 90 days to see what their health changes are (if any). You can then compare the Shakeology users to the control participants to prove/disprove Shakeology's health claims.

0:54 - All participants were required to drink Shakeology for breakfast and lunch for 90 days. No other diet or exercise changes were required. Ok, but Beachbody markets Shakeology as a 1-shake-a-day health supplement. Not only that, but results from this study could be skewed based on what the participants ate besides just their shakes. For example, what if they ate ice cream for dinner, with a side of bacon, and topped off with a litre of cola? Or what if they didn't eat anything else at all? Again, it would be nice to have a publication in order to understand the parameters of this study.

Also, I think most people would agree that healthy living requires a two-tiered approach with both diet and exercise being equally important in maintaining a healthy weight and living a healthy lifestyle. I don't understand why exercise was not included in this study, after all, Beachbody is a company that markets and sells both nutritional supplements and fitness programs (good ones too!).

I am not sure if the trial organizers wanted to prevent "muddied waters" by just focusing on Shakeology, but I think that if a pretty standard, moderate exercise program could add to the findings.

1:27 - Okay, here is where things start to get interesting. Fact time! Facts are good right? Well, not if you actually take the time to think about what is being presented to us. First of all, let's take a look at the weight loss stats.

So the weight loss stats aren't too bad, but things get more interesting later, especially when we look at the cholesterol stats. So what this graph is telling us is that the average weight loss among the 50 participants is 9.3 lbs. However, the "high" weight loss was 24 lbs. If you remember back to math class, you know that the average is calculated by summing all of the results, and dividing by the number of participants. In this case, we would add up the weight lost (or gained) from all 50 participants, and divide by 50.

There are a couple different scenarios as to how we came to a 9.3 lbs. average weight loss. First of all, a "high" value of 24 can really pull an average in that particular direction. So, either:

  1. Majority of the weight loss was in the couple pounds lost range, and the 24 lbs. lost "pulled" the average lower. In this case, the 24 lbs. lost could be considered the "outlier" or anomaly, and therefore becomes less significant because most of the data points fell within a similar range.

  2. On the other hand, there may have been lots of data points between the average and the high, possibly with weight loss values of 12, 13, 14, 15, etc. However, to balance that out and maintain a 9.3 lbs. average, that means that there would have to be a slew of data points "north" of the average, and some potentially even on the weight gained side of the study.

How can an "outlier" data point be insignificant? Well, if you were to conduct a trial, and say, 95% of your participants got very similar results. In this case, let's just assume around a couple pounds weight loss in a 90 day study. However, you then have 1 person in the group that has a 24 pound weight loss. From a scientific standpoint, you could then hypothesize that something was quite different for that one participant. Maybe they starved themselves outside of drinking Shakeology. Maybe they exercised every day. Maybe they completely overhauled their diet since they knew they were taking part in a trial. All of the above are fine scenarios (except for the starving themselves) except for the fact that in a trial such as this, you goal is to try and eliminate all factors that may skew results, unless of course you are looking for specific results.

Once again, it would be interesting to see the published study to see all of the data points and where how all of the participants fared along with their diets, daily lifestyles, etc. rather than just the highlights for marketing purposes.

1:52 - Think of all of the points I presented above regarding the weight loss data points and consider them for the data presented for the reduction in cholesterol. Again, the average reduction in Total Cholesterol is 7% (will get to that later), and the high data point is a 50% reduction. That is a wide data spread, also raising eyebrows to where all of the data points fall. Just by staring at this graph, it is entirely possible for one to assume or believe that participants in the study actually raised their cholesterol. How you say? Again, if the average is 7%, and the high is 50%, then there has to be data points that balance out the average, making it possible for some participants to be on the gain side of the equation.

A couple other pieces of information that I would like to know about this study.

  1. What were the participants numbers coming into this trial? We already know that they were selected chosen through a rigorous selection process, does this mean that they all had total cholesterol levels of 240+, making them prime for lowering their cholesterol? Also consider this: if a participant with total cholesterol levels at 260, placing them in the "high risk" category for heart disease loses the average in this study (7%), they still fall within the "high risk" category.

  2. Also, you may have heard that there are two main types of cholesterol. Your LDL, or "bad" cholesterol as well as your HDL, or "good" cholesterol. All this study told us is that participants Total cholesterol fell by an average of 7%. Many studies have shown that having higher LDL isn't necessarily a bad thing, assuming your HDL is also high. So, I would like to think that my HDL wasn't falling from taking Shakeology either. This trial needs further clarification.

2:21 - More data, same as above. Quite a high data spread. Once again, I actually personally think that Shakeology would be extremely beneficial in regulating blood sugar. The protein found in the shakes alone helps stabilize blood sugar. Unfortunately, the data from this study is just presented poorly.

Final Thoughts

So what does this mean for this clinical trial? Again, I know Shakeology helps people lose weight. I have seen many examples of it, including my wife. I believe it may even be possible for Shakeology to lower blood sugar over an extended period of time as well as lower cholesterol, assuming the participant also exercises and consumes a well-balanced diet beyond their Shakeology.

There are absolutely no magic pills to make you healthy in this world. Go back and read that again. A healthy lifestyle is achieved by exercising regularly, eating a sensible diet most of the time, not smoking, not drinking too much, and maintaining a healthy weight - which is usually accomplished by following the previous actions.

Shakeology can be a tool to help you get there. As I said before, both my wife and I use it, and feel that it helps improve our health in a positive way. Having said that, I don't believe that I can just not exercise or eat whatever I want and think that Shakeology will just magically make everything better (as this trial somehow is implying).

I think this is yet another example of looking into something beyond just reading a headline, or watching a 3 minute video and spouting off about how great Shakeology is. I have already seen countless Beachbody Coaches pumping this video saying, "See, see, Shakeology works, its proven!"

I will say it again, I pride myself in trying to stay as objective as possible and do my best not to sound like a pitchy salesperson. I think there are far too many individuals in the fitness world acting as a salesperson sharing or telling you information that they clearly have no idea what they're talking about.

Do I think Shakeology is a good product. Honestly, I do. But I don't think this video does anything to prove that case. In fact, I feel bad that it will actually "cheapen" the feeling towards it for many who may have been on the fence in the first place.

If you have been considering it, give it a shot. Purchase a bag, take it for 30 days and see how you feel. If you want to take things even further, do the full enchilada and have your doc run blood work for you before you begin and run your own trial. Along with taking Shakeology, however, make sure you exercise regularly and eat a balanced diet beyond just your shakes.

BCAA's - Save Your Money...

Branched Chain Amino Acids. You're a fool if you don't supplement with them, right? Well, not so fast there bro!

We've all heard either the local muscle head at the gym, the sales team at the supplement store, or those "experts" online claiming that BCAA's are crucial to your success. Well, the fine folks over at SuppVersity have done another fine job about breaking down how "effective" this supplement actually is.

I won't re-hash what SuppVersity has already done so well, so make sure to head over there and read the report yourself.

always like to give my body the benefit of the doubt. I try and get virtually all of my calories from solid, real foods, and then use supplements as just that - supplementing my diet to fill in any holes that I may have missed along the way.

I commonly see people touting the benefits of this supplement or that supplement. BCAA's are no different. Everyone suddenly becomes an "expert" as to what brand to take and how effective it has been. Whether you agree with me or not, here is the list of supplements that I personally take and wish to invest my money on, based on the evidence and research that I have read. Yes, this list is every supplement that I take. Beyond that, I aim for as well-rounded diet as I can possibly get. Then, my supplements patch any holes on a day to day basis.

  1. Shakeology - This acts as my insurance policy. Some days I nail my diet, some days I do not. But, the days that I too busy to get my regular meals, or am missing something from my servings, my Shakeology is there to back me up.

  2. Vitamin D 1000IU - I only take this during the fall and winter months since living in Southern Ontario means a drastic decrease in my sun exposure.

  3. Whey Protein - Nothing fancy. Just plain and simple whey. Sometimes I mix with water, sometimes I mix with milk. Yes, I drink milk.

  4. Fish Oil - The benefits here are too good to pass up.

  5. Creatine Monohydrate - I don't take it all the time, but often enough. Also nothing fancy here. There is absolutely no proof that any brand or "form factor" works any better than monohydrate. Save your money, don't listen to the guy at GNC.

Eating McDonald's and Losing Weight

Here is a popular story that is making its way around the interwebs, not sure if you've seen it or not. Basically, a high school teacher from Iowa ate nothing but McDonald's for 90 days, and low and behold....*gasp* he LOST weight!

Before everyone starts shouting profanities at me for having absolutely zero problems with this little experiment, let's discuss the study and its findings.

The point of the experiment wasn’t to prove that living off McDonald’s is healthy, per se, but rather that sticking to a balanced diet, even at a fast-food joint, can have a big impact.

Exactly. Remember that this was not a study about eating a balanced diet full of vitamins and nutrients, it was about losing weight and staying within certain daily recommended numbers such as caloric intake

See, Cisna ate his fair share of burgers, but he didn’t exceed the recommended daily allowance for carbs, sodium, sugar, etc., in the meals his students helped him plan. In an interview with a local news station he says that in a given day he might have two Egg White Delights, a bowl of maple oatmeal, and 1 percent milk for breakfast, salad for lunch, and a Value Meal for dinner.

Barilla Microwaveable Meals Penne.jpg

Despite dinner, his breakfasts and lunch actually sound quite healthy, and despite the fact that he is eating at McDonald's, sounds healthier than what most people eat - microwaveable junk anyone?

“I can eat any food at McDonald's that I want as long as I’m smart with the rest of the day with what I balance it out with,” Cisna says. He also started walking 45 minutes a day during the three months he was eating at McDonald’s (free of charge, thanks to the interest of a local franchise owner).

Notice what is said here - balance. The problem most people run into is that they indulge far too often, or when they do indulge, they lie to themselves as to what a 'serving' actually is. If most people followed a moderate plan of say 80/20, 80% healthy eating, 20% cheat snacks/meals, then they would probably be a lot better off.

Not only that, but the teacher also admitted to starting to walk 45 minutes a day. Walking is far from great exercise for those of us who are fit, but for those who have a decent amount of weight to lose, even walking can go a long way to improving overall health. It probably also accounted for at least part of that cholesterol drop he witnessed.

One last thing, it is mentioned at how the local Mickie-D's allowed him to eat for free. I don't know about all of you, but I find eating at home or taking a packed lunch is far less expensive than eating fast food every day. There are so many other factors that are unaccounted for in this study. I can almost bet that this teacher wasn't drinking soft drinks with every meal...

This isn't a ground-breaking study by any means. It is yet another sensationalized study to drum up some attention. One of those stories that Jim and Nancy can start talking about at the coffee maker at work, joking about how, "See, I told you McDonald's ain't so bad!"

We can pull a couple things from a story like this, however.

  1. I get questions from people all the time about calorie burning this, and calorie burning that. Estimating, calculating, and just trying to figure out the best way to burn as many calories as possible with exercise. It always happens with people hopping back on the horse too, trying to cram 3 workouts in in a day (before breakfast, at lunch, and right before bed) because they have lots of weight to lose.

Truth be told, regardless of how much you exercise (unless you are training for the Olympics) it is still a relatively small calorie burn compared to your regular daily activity. I am dumbfounded by the amount of time and effort people put into trying to exercise as much as they can rather than just educating themselves and focusing on changing their diets. Exercise is great for your body and brain, and has a part to play in your weight loss journey, but focusing on your diet is a far more beneficial strategy.

  2. Just because someone is thin or doesn't appear to have weight to lose does not mean that they are 'healthy'. The food you put in your gob plays a much larger role than just how much you weigh. It also has to do with your energy levels, what you look like, how well you function, how you think, your digestive efficiency, your performance, etc., I can go all day.

Just because someone says, "I have a fast metabolism, I can eat whatever I want!" does not mean they are improving their overall health. That is one of the main reasons why I chose to start drinking Shakeology. I didn't have weight to lose. In fact, I started taking Shakeology right around the time I started Body Beast and was attempting to gain weight.

I knew that regardless of your health and fitness goals (gain weight, lose weight, maintain weight), nutrition is what makes us function better and I need to make every single calorie count nutritionally.

Hey Team

Welcome to November! With the holiday season right around the corner, you basically have two choices right now. First, and the option I highly recommend AGAINST, is to "write off" the rest of the year, eat like a pig, and wait until the gyms fill up for the first week or two in January to finally get off your ass and get moving.

OR, you could put a plan into motion NOW to get fit, change your diet, and be well into your new lifestyle before 2014 even starts! Wouldn't it be great to see family over the holidays and everyone notice how much you've changed? I don't just mean losing weight, by the way. Sure, that is a nice side effect of healthy eating/exercise for some of you. Instead, think of how great you will feel! People walk differently, their postures improve, and they just overall feel much better in their own skin when they eat well and stay active. That is called confidence. Makes you feel like a million bucks. Luckily, we have solutions for everybody!

Lots to cover this week. Sorry if some of this is repetitive to some of you, but we have lots of new team members this week, so I want to make sure everyone is caught up with everything going on right now!

1. If you haven't already, make sure to check out our Facebook accountability group Team Fitness for Life. We have an amazing group of individuals keeping each other motivated/inspired to keep active and eating well.

2. Helpouts by Google launched yesterday (November 5th). I have already helped a man from Lebanon and another from California with some health and fitness questions. This is a remarkable opportunity for me, and I am really excited to see what sort of opportunities await!

3. My first ever 60-Day Coach training program got underway this past Monday. The group is already doing really well and showing great initiative. I just know that the 60 days' worth of training will benefit them all, not just with their businesses, but in other aspects in life too. I am already looking ahead to start the next group on Monday December 2nd. If you have ever thought about Beachbody Coaching and are possibly interested in signing up, please let me know so we can discuss. I am open to having video chats with anyone interested, so that you can have a one on one, face to face with me and get my honest opinion about the opportunity!

4. Don't forget, P90X3 launches on December 10th! If you order by December 15th, then you are guaranteed to have it by Christmas. Even better than that, you can join my P90X3 Challenge Group and progress through the program with a group of us. Even though we all like to workout in the privacy of our own homes, research has shown that a lot of people thrive in a group workout setting. Being a part of our Challenge Group on Facebook, gives you that group mentality, which can be incredibly encouraging and motivating!

5. I have sent quite a few free Shakeology samples out lately. If you are one of those people and would like to order, but are unsure of what flavour would be best for you, remember that there are more Shakeology options available, including a "Shakeology Taste Sampler." (Limit one per customer) You get 4 Shakeology samples - 2 chocolate, 1 green berry, 1 vanilla. It is a great way to pick your favourite before ordering a full 30-day supply.

6. On Mondays to Fridays, at 8pm, I am posting links on my Facebook page to some of my favourite and most popular blogs from the archive. Here are the posts from the past week:

Enjoy the Journey (Because you can!)

Weekly Newsletter

Hey Everyone

Welcome to October! A new month always brings exciting new opportunities, and with just a few months left in the year, it is also time to start planning ahead to the New Year. Lots of new, exciting, but also some disappointing news from me today.

First off, let me get the disappointing news out of the way first. I am withdrawing from the World's Toughest Mudder. For those of you who have been following me will know, I have a heart condition known as "Atrial Flutter." To make a long story short, I have been cleared for exercise, but certain types of training seem to be causing my symptoms to flare up, and I really don't think I am physically able, nor is it safe, to continue on with my training and competing at such a rigorous event. This is disappointing for me, but at the same time, health always comes first, and I am focusing on getting the required treatment so that I can make plans to compete again in the future.

For those interested, I am currently planning out my next training blocks. I plan on doing a Body Beast/One on One Hybrid that will focus on a bit of mass gaining, but also strength improvements. There will also be some performance goals there as well since I am now back playing hockey.

Now on to the exciting pieces of info from the past week:

1. Beachbody has announced their October promotions. During the month of October, you can get P90X or P90X2 Challenge Packs for just $180. That saves you over $90! Even if you already own X and/or X2, this is a great opportunity to save some money and pick up a copy of the program for a friend/family member, and you could keep the Shakeology for yourself.

2. Beachbody now offers 2 new purchasing options for Shakeology. First, you can get a taste sampler, where you will receive a single servings of the following flavours - 2 chocolate, 1 vanilla, 1 greenberry. Keep in mind that these are limited to 1 per taste sampler per customer. For those of you who have been asking for it, you can now order chocolate/vanilla combo packs so that you can keep some variety with your healthiest meal of the day!

3. New P90X3 details!

4. I am going to be running a P90X3 Challenge Group to kick off the New Year! P90X3 is available for order on December 10th. If you order before December 15th, Beachbody guarantees that you will get it by Christmas. Take a few days off for the holiday season, and then join an already-growing group of us to start the program sometime between December 29th and January 11th!

Weekly Newsletter

Hey Everyone

September is winding down, as this is my last weekly newsletter of the month. Unbelievable!

That also means that, as of this Saturday coming up (28th), I only have 7 weeks until the World's Toughest Mudder!...

I want to thank everyone for their support after last week's rant. I never intended for it to be a pity party on my behalf, just wanted to share with all of you the time and effort I put into helping others. I received such an amazing outpouring of support in return, definitely picking my head back up and reminding me that I have some amazing team members, as well as reminding me how many great people I already get to interact with!

Just a quick reminder. I am not giving up Coaching, in fact, I plan on being a Beachbody Coach for a long time! I just plan on taking a step back from a lot of the services I provide, and focusing more on my own team members/Coaches and helping the people that truly want to be helped.

A real quick update on the exciting developments/news stories from this past week:

1. In case you haven't heard, P90X3 is coming out on December 10th 2013. There are plenty of other details that have been released, including a brand-new video. You can find all of the new information on my website.

2. Beachbody has announced new Shakeology options. Both of these options have been highly-requested. First, you can now order Shakeology "Taste Samplers", which is a 4-pack of Shakeology samples: 2 chocolate, 1 vanilla, 1 green berry. Keep in mind that they limit just 1 sampler pack per customer. Second, you can now order chocolate/vanilla combo packs. Keep in mind that these packs are 24 pouches of the individually-packed samples. I prefer the 30-serving bags as the value is better, but if you wish to have more variety in your life, this option is now available. Also great for Coaches who wish to keep these 2 popular flavours in stock to hand out to customers.

3. The latest P90X University course is now available: The Science of P90X - Circuit Training

And 2 favors that I ask:

1) If you like the hard work I put into writing my blogs and videos, PLEASE help me out by sharing them.  Click the share links below them and share them on FB, Twitter, etc.  It really helps me get more exposure and grow our team!

2) Also, as always, remember that the way I benefit from being your coach is that I earn a commission from any Beachbody products that you purchase, as long as you buy them through my site, tylerrobbinsfitness.com. It helps with the amount of time I spend answering all your questions, writing my blogs, filming my videos, and helping you out. Thank you! I really appreciate it!

Everyone have a great week!

Healing and Recovery

Since I am in my "transition" or "recovery" week, I figured it would be a great time to list some advice on how to maximize your recovery efforts:

raymond_george-costanza-shrinkage.jpg
  1. Take antioxidants – Green tea catechins and N-acetyl-cystein. Both are powerful antioxidants, they reduce muscle soreness and they’re awesome for your health. Shakeology has tons of antioxidants.
  2. Eat fish or supplement with fish oil – This will allow you to move better and you’ll end up being less sore. If your muscles and connective tissues are the gears and cogs that move your body, fish oil is the grease that keeps everything running smoothly.
  3. "I was in the pool!" - Cold showers and/or baths help alleviate sore muscles. Just remember to lock your door when you are changing...
  4. Protein - Helps your muscles re-build. Make sure you are taking in proper amounts of protein throughout the day from a variety of sources.
  5. Carbohydrates - Immediately following a workout. This helps replenish spent glycogen stores helping with recovery.
  6. Casein Protein - I like to eat cottage cheese before bed. Cottage cheese contains casein protein, a slower-digesting protein, to help repair and rebuild sore/broken-down muscles as your sleep!
  7. Sleep - Ah yes, one of the most under-utilized recovery tools in your arsenal. Too many people sleep far too little.  If you feel like napping (and have time for it), do that too!
  8. Stretch - Stretching helps improve range of motion, but it also allows the tired and/or repairing muscle fibers to open up to better circulation, thus improving recovery.

Weekly Newsletter

Hey Everyone

Wow, I can't believe we are reaching the end of summer. For some of you, summer may already be over. Of course it isn't officially the end of summer for a few more weeks, but everyone knows that the unofficial end of summer is when the kids go back to school.

Whether you have kids or not, the return to school is usually a time when people start getting back into a more consistent routine. Let's face it, summer tends to be a hectic time of year, as so many people take holidays or have different schedules. Not only that, but BBQs, get-togethers, campouts, picnics, parties, long weekends, etc. all add to either missing workouts and/or neglecting your diet. Be honest with me and yourself.

Not to fret, however, as I always find getting back into a consistent routine is great for my mind and body. My brain enjoys repetition, as does my body. It is comfortable. For some of you, you may not have exercised in a while now. Well, welcome back, now is the time to get your sh*t together and stop dragging your feet! Now is as good of time as any, to finish off the last few months of the year strong!

This week's topics of interest:

1. Here's a story I shared on my Facebook page the other day (in case you missed it):

I want to share a little story with all of you. I recently interviewed for a Personal Trainer position at a high-end fitness facility. To be honest, I was completely discouraged by their lack of interest in both my CSCS certification and my personal training experience (I have been training for a few years now part-time). Anyways, it was made perfectly clear to me that all they were looking for was a salesman to sell training packages.

One of their packages that really struck me was a 3-month, 3 day a week package for $2500....don't grab your calculator, I will do the math for you. That is around $55/1-hour session. That is on TOP of membership fees.

First of all, I cannot, in good conscience, work for a company like that.

Secondly, and I know it is tough to compare, but in 3-month's time, a person could purchase a P90X Challenge Pack (for example), all of the equipment they need, get free Coaching from me on their diet, and still have plenty of cash left over to replace all of their clothes that are now too large to fit them because of how much success they will have in 3-months time, when compared to paying $2500+...

End of rant...

2. A friendly reminder that P90X3 is coming this winter! I haven't heard any more details, but I hope you are all as excited as I am!

3. My Body Beast Transformation Video now has over 17k views! Another view/share/like to help keep my momentum going would be greatly appreciated.

4. The TurboFireBody Beast, and Focus T25 Challenge Packs are all on sale until the end of the month. Let me know if you have any questions about these programs.

5. Shakeology 10-Packs are still available and as popular as ever. Let me know if you're interested!

Weekly Newsletter

Hey Everybody

I hope all is well! I officially kicked off my World's Toughest Mudder training the other day, so as I type this I am feeling extremely stiff/sore/tired. The perfect sign that training is new and going well!

Lots to cover this week, so here goes:

1. Probably the biggest announcement of the week (at least in my opinion) has been the official (or unofficial) announcement that P90X3 will be coming this winter! I am proud to say that I was one of the very first people online (from what I can tell) who brought this news to all of you. I was so quick on the draw, in fact, that Beachbody had initially asked me to remove the teaser trailer from my YouTube channel. I am guessing because I was getting more hits than their official P90X3 splash page! Anyways, check out this link for all of the latest P90X3 news. Not a lot is known as of yet, but you know I will share any and all information with all of you as I hear anything!

2. Unbeknownst to me, Beachbody has extended the Focus T25 Challenge Pack promotion until the end of August. So, until August 31st, you can get the Focus T25 Challenge Pack for just $180!

3. Beachbody's August promotion is not just one, but two Challenge Packs on sale! You can get either the TurboFire or Body Beast (with Shakeology, not the supplements) Challenge Packs for just $160! Considering Shakeology retails for $130, you are getting a program for just $30. Not only that, but if any of you are considering becoming a Coach, then Beachbody will also waive your Coach sign up fee ($40 value) if you purchase a Challenge Pack.

4. Since I am heading back to World's Toughest Mudder, I am asking (like I did last year) for any sponsorships or personal donations to help cover the costs of my training, travel and gear for the event. I spend a lot of my free time to provide a service to all of you (Coaching) for little to no cost to you, so if you would be so gracious to help me out with my trip to WTM that would be great. Better yet, purchase a program, Shakeology, or Challenge Pack, as you get something in return and I get the commission to help pay for my trip to New Jersey!

5. My latest shipments of Vanilla and Chocolate Shakeology samples have arrived, so if you wish to request a sample, or purchase a 10-pack, now would be the time to do so. I have Vanilla, Chocolate, and Greenberry on hand, so the choice is yours! The 10-packs have been a huge hit for a number of reasons. Not only do you get a better 'feel' for the product, but by asking you to help me cover the costs (I do not profit on these at all), but you can also try out more than one flavour before purchasing.

How much money can you make as a Beachbody Coach?

I get this question often enough, especially from folks who are interested in potentially becoming a Coach. So how much money do I make, and how much money do Beachbody Coaches make?

I will start off discussing my personal experiences as a Coach and then go on to discuss stats surrounding everyone else. First of all, I am not  going to give any monetary figures in this blog. One, I don't wish to come off as 'bragging'. And two, it's not really anyone's business, so there!

I want to also start off by saying that I have been like an "unofficial" Beachbody Coach for years now. For those of you who have been following my YouTube channel and blog know, I have been blogging and video blogging everything Beachbody and health and fitness-related for years. I have been an athlete my entire life, I love to be active, and I love the science behind everything health and science related.

Becoming a Beachbody Coach (when it was finally made available to us Canadians) was a no-brainer for me as I knew this would be just another outlet for me to help others lead healthy lives. I like to think that I have always been honest with my reviews, and I know for a fact that my blogs have helped so many stay informed, so as cliched and as corny as it sounds, that is very fulfilling for me. If you don't believe me, go and look back all of the blogs and videos I made prior to signing up as a Coach on October 1st 2012. I was connecting and helping others online for years prior to even becoming a Coach!

Beachbody Coaching is certainly not  a "get rich quick" scheme. I know many hear the phrase "pyramid scheme" and run for the hills, but I will say that anyone  has an opportunity to make a sustainable earning. Whether that is a part-time earning or a full-time earning is strictly up to each individual!

I know I have heard lots of folks commenting on the fact that the Beachbody Coach market is so diluted and diverse already, what is the point of becoming a Coach as there is no real way of making it profitable. This couldn't be further from the truth! At the time I am writing this blog, there are roughly 120,000 Beachbody Coaches in North America. There is over 500 million people in North America, not to mention the fact that I have heard that the Coaching opportunity is aiming to expand to the UK and Europe in the future (possibly sooner rather than later!)

I am not yet at the point where I can make Beachbody a full-time career, and it may never reach that point, but as I said earlier, I enjoy doing what I do (helping others) so I will continue to do what I do, so I might as well be a Coach and earn a bit of money on the side.

From the money I earn as a Coach (I have been a Coach for just under 10 months at the time I am writing this blog) I am able to put my earnings towards:

  • No longer having to pay for any Beachbody programs I want
  • I no longer have to pay for my Shakeology
  • I have purchased new fitness equipment (dumbbells, squat rack, weight plates)
  • I am currently in the process of re-modeling my basement and home gym
  • I pay for athletic events that I enjoy competing in (Tough Mudder, World's Toughest Mudder

When I attended the Beachbody Coach Summit, it was incredibly inspiring to see a parade of Coaches being honoured on stage due to their "financial freedom" from their full-time jobs, their debt, their mortgages, etc. The reality of the matter is that a lot of Coaches may never reach that point, but the opportunity is there to earn as much as you wish!

This is not a plea to grow my team, because to be perfectly honest with you, as a Beachbody Coach, I technically earn more direct commission from regular paying customers than I do from Coaches on my team, but just like helping others achieve their health and fitness goals, I enjoy creating a team of like-minded individuals who wish to make an earning (at any level) by helping others.

Statistics & Rank – Beachbody Coach Income

How many Coaches are there? – Currently there are almost 120,000 coaches within Team Beachbody. A lot of the people who sign up do so to become what is known as a "discount Coach" to get a discount on their regular purchases, like Shakeology. This is a perfectly viable option for a lot of folks who find themselves purchasing Beachbody products on a consistent basis since you get a 25% discount on all Beachbody products. Other people put in the time and effort into building a home business while helping others reach their health and fitness goals.

Does Beachbody pay ALL Coaches a commission? – The answer is no. Not all Beachbody Coaches make a commission. Like I said, some only become a Coach for the discount. Roughly 32% of those who sign up to be a Coach never receive a commission from Beachbody. That means that 68% of Coaches have chosen to use the opportunity to grow a business.

The best part about this the Beachbody Coach income is that when you help others succeed, you succeed as well. Its the same philosophy with the workouts as well.

Now for the part you have been waiting for…

How Much Money Do Beachbody Coaches Make? – Beachbody Coach Income

Here is the breakdown of Beachbody Coach Income based on the 2012 Team Beachbody financials:

Emerald Rank = Avg. Yearly Earnings: $3,353 High: $261,621

Ruby Rank  = Avg. Yearly Earnings: $11,011  High: $62,840

Diamond Rank = Avg. Yearly Earnings: $14,658. High: $143,284

Weekly Newsletter

Hey Everybody

I can't believe how quickly July (and this year) are flying by! For those of you who don't know, I am still making my way through Focus T25 (and loving it!). I started the Beta Phase earlier this week. I plan on doing 4 weeks of the Beta phase before jumping into my World's Toughest Mudder training on Monday August 19th. I am still having some discomfort in my right elbow...

I am also taking some time to finish my basement. I am about 95% done the framing (hoping to be done by this weekend). The goal with my basement is to turn most of it into an awesome home gym! Keep an eye out for updates on my social media outlets over the next several weeks as that takes shape.

Here are the topics of discussion for this week:

1. There is just a week left to take advantage of the free shipping offer for Focus T25 as well as save over $90 on the Focus T25 Challenge Pack! The general reaction around this program is that it is exceeding people's expectations (myself included). If you don't believe me, go check out my YouTube Channel to see my reactions to the workouts.

2. My Shakeology 10-Packs have been a HUGE success so far. I have already had a number of you requesting these. Because of this, I am completely out of my vanilla samples and only have 3 chocolate samples left. (I still have Greenberry as well) Not to worry, I have more Chocolate and Vanilla sample packs arriving later this week/early next week. These 10-packs are great for those of you who wish to try out a couple different flavours, not to mention witnessing the effects of this amazing product over a 10 day span. Please remember, if you wish to purchase, make sure you fill out this form and pay $50USD through the PayPal link provided on that same page. I promise you I am not profiting from this, in fact I lose a bit on each sale, but I wish to provide this opportunity to all of you in hopes that you will appreciate the product as much as I do!

3. Beachbody CEO Carl Daikeler Tweeted this the other day:

@CarlDaikeler: Can't tell you why yet but if you can clear your calendar for the day or a couple hours on Mon Aug 5th, it's gonna be exciting and worth it!

I will be following this and will of course keep you all updated with any news that I hear of. It sounds interesting, and I am a sucker for teasers like this! :P

4. You will notice on of my blogs (link below) is about Dan's health and fitness journey. I am always on the look out for success stories, so if you would like to be featured on my blog, make sure you e-mail me and we can discuss having you featured!

Hey Everybody

I trust you are all doing well and progressing towards your health/fitness goals. A bit of a crappy week for me as I have been dealing with a few aches/pains that I am trying to get rid of before I dive head-first into my World's Toughest Mudder training. I am taking some time off from my strength training, but I am still pressing play with Focus T25. I really am enjoying the program, as it is keeping me sane, allowing me to workout, yet it is mostly lower-body focused (at least for now) so that I can allow my right elbow to heal.

Just a head's up for those of you interested, I am still mulling over what my plans are going to be, but I am quite certain that I am going to shorten the Alpha Phase by 1 week and jump into the Beta Phase starting Monday, so keep an eye out for my video blogs as I start the Beta Phase!

This week's topics of interest:

1. I have had some tremendous interest for my Shakeology 10-Packs. These offer a terrific opportunity to try Shakeology (and more than one flavour if you're interested) for a longer duration than just 1 sample. I do ask that you pay $50 for these 10-packs, but I promise you that I am not profiting from these at all, just trying to re-coup my costs. The goal here is to allow all of you a chance to get a better feel for the product!

2. For those of you who haven't joined, make sure to check out our Facebook accountability/Challenge group Team Fitness for Life. This group is filled with amazing inspiring people who help motivate and encourage each other to stay active. Research has shown that most people thrive in a "group setting", and although we all choose to workout at home (on our own), this group offers a great chance for that camaraderie.

3. Just a quick reminder that the Focus T25 Challenge Pack is still on sale for $180 until the end of July. This is a savings of over $90! Keep in mind that you can cancel your Shakeology or change flavours at ANY time, penalty-free.

4. I received some of the photos from my Body Beast testimonial photo shoot I had while I was in Vegas. To see them, head on over to my Facebook Page.

Hey Everybody

I just want to discuss the topic of Shakeology samples really quick because I have had a few questions from some of you.

Why do I offer free Shakeology samples?

Crazy right? I spend $6-7 per serving, straight out of my own pocket to send samples out to anyone interested. Why do I do this? Well, to be honest, I do so because I wish to share it with as many people as possible. I am more than willing to fork out the dough to help all of you discover this product. Having said that, I don't do this just so that you can "see what it tastes like"...

When I first signed up to be a Coach back on October 1st 2012, I didn't sign up for Shakeology right away. I was skeptical about the product because of how "sleazy" a lot of Beachbody Coaches can be - let's be honest here!

What finally sparked me to give it a try was because I had my World's Toughest Mudder coming up in November, so I figured it could help aid my recovery from training, as well as improve my energy levels (if was as good as advertised). Now that I have been taking it since the beginning of November, I refuse to give it up!

I truly, honestly believe in this product. So much so, that I now have my mom taking it, my sister taking it, and I am actively trying to get my brother and dad to take it too.

The tough part in all of this, is trying to get someone to appreciate how great of a product is with just one taste (some of you have had more than one sample mind you!).

What I ask out of many of you is this, if I have sent you a sample and you at least somewhat like the flavour (not even LOVE it), be honest with yourself and try a month's supply. Beachbody has a "bottom of the bag guarantee" so if you honestly don't feel any different by the end of the 30 days, you can get a full refund...even if the bag is empty (hence the name of the guarantee!). Beachbody is that confident in their product that they are willing to let you drink down the entire bag and STILL give you your money back if you desire...quite a statement in my opinion!

Buy a bag, take Shakeology every. single. day. for 30 straight days, replacing one meal or snack a day with it, exercise for at least 30 minutes every day for those 30 days, and honestly let me know how you feel after 30 days!

As for the flavour, I have a Coach on my team who admitted to me that he did not like the taste of Shakeology when he first started, but not he can't go without it. Just keep that in mind as well.

If you have any questions/comments/concerns surrounding Shakeology, e-mail me!

This week's topics of interest:

1. Focus T25 has been such a HUGE hit that Beachbody is extending free shipping until July 28th! Challenge Pack is also on sale for $180 (over $70 savings) until the end of July. Message me for further details.

Hey Everybody

Welcome to July! Wow, the year is already half over, time is flying by. I know I sound like a broken record, but most people don't realize that time keeps on passing you by whether you choose to improve yourself or not! Don't have enough time to exercise? Well, Beachbody has you covered now...

This week's topics:

1. Wow, the buzz surrounding Focus T25 is just unbelievable! The interest shown by not only many on my team, but also customers and Coaches throughout Beachbody Nation is incredible! My wife and I have been working our way through the program as well, and now that I am a week and a half in, I can honestly say that I believe Beachbody has created such a perfectly versatile program here!

For those of you who are already fit from Insanity or Asylum, this can be used as a great "maintenance" routine. For those with other goals (including myself) it works well as an add-on. I have been doing more of a traditional strength program on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays, with Focus T25 right alongside of it.

For those interested, you can find the Focus T25 Base kit and add-on Gamma Phase here.

Remember that the program is also paired with Shakeology, giving the perfect combination of exercise and nutrition in a Challenge Pack. From now until the end of July, the Challenge Pack is also on sale for $180 (over $70 savings).

2. For those interested in Shakeology, I have a few vanilla samples left if you wish to try, I will send you a sample for free. I also have a delivery of chocolate samples showing up later this week. I have sent out vanilla samples to many of you, for those of you waiting on a chocolate sample, I will let you know when I am sending them out. If you wish to try Shakeology, e-mail me back with your mailing address and flavour of choice. Keep in mind that I now also offer Shakeology 10-Packs which offer an opportunity to try a couple flavours, and get a better feel for the shakes before ordering an entire month's supply.

3. For those interested, I have created a photo album on my Facebook page showing all of the great people I have met through my short time as a Beachbody Coach!

4. Finally, I want to leave you with a message Beachbody CEO Carl Daikeler posted on his Facebook on Tuesday:

Why don't Team Beachbody Coaches need to have any fear about inviting people to buy from or join or network?
2 reasons:

(1) The products work. They live up to, and usually surpass the expectations for body transformation that customers have. No reason to fear rejection when you are representing to total package that really gets results.

(2) Our mission is to "help people achieve their goals and enjoy healthy fulfilling lives". While greed drives many MLM's, our drive is to help people. When you are not trying to "close a sale" but instead are trying to truly help someone improve their life, you have nothing to fear. And guess what? That's good business.

Sure, some people you talk to may not be ready to participate. That's okay. But as a coach, you should never feel anything but total pride in your efforts to help more people. Every day - HELP MORE PEOPLE!

And from the looks of results in the last week, you are definitely feeling the crazy momentum that happens when your intent lines up with that message! Keep it going!

Hey Everybody

WOW, what a week! This time last week, I was getting ready to head to the airport to fly to Vegas for Coach Summit. If you weren't following along, head on over to tylerrobbinsfitness.com and check out my Instagram feed there. I had such an awesome time, meeting some of the most amazing individuals, not only Beachbody 'celebs', but some other Coaches who I have only connected with online.

Here are some of the topics I am covering this week (lots to cover, I will try and make it quick):

1. Focus T25 is here! I am currently making my way through the program (I just finished Day 3), and I have to admit that it has been exceeding my expectations so far! Think of this program as a condensed (but still intense) version of both Insanity and Asylum combined! Beachbody is offering free shipping until the end of July!

2. Vanilla Shakeology is here! So many people have been requesting this. To be honest, there are far more people excited about this than I thought there would be! The announcement at Coach Summit came with a tremendous applause. I have samples, so if you would like to try it out, let me know! If you order before July 7th, there is free shipping on it as well!

3. Focus T25 is also available in a Challenge Pack! Not only is it available in a Challenge Pack, but it is on sale from now, until the end of July for just $180! Considering the program itself is $120, you are saving over $70 if you were to purchase both Focus T25 and Shakeology separately. Not only THAT, but Beachbody still has their promotion available where you can upgrade to Coach status for free ($40 value) with the purchase of any Challenge Pack!

4. With all of the hype surrounding Summit, I would like to remind you that the Les Mills Combat Challenge Pack is still on sale for the remainder of the month of June for just $140. Again, considering Shakeology retails for $130, you are saving a ton of money!

5. Many of you still haven't found your way over to our accountability group "Team Fitness for Life!" If you have a Facebook account, make your way over there and ask to join the group. There is a great group of like-minded individuals pushing play and staying accountable, motivating and helping each other out. It is a great way to stick with your diet and exercise plan.

6. The other day I announced my "Shakeology 10-Packs." For a faction of the cost of a full bag of Shakeology, I will send you 10 individual Shakeology samples so that you can try Shakeology out before you give a full month's bag a shot. Individual samples really are intended to see if you like the taste, whereas 10 samples will allow you to start to feel the benefits of Shakeology and what it can do for your body!

7. If you haven't seen this video yet, I would highly recommend you watch it...

8. I have one spot remaining on my Team Beachbody Cup team. If you are looking to become a Coach, this would be a fantastic opportunity to hit the ground running!

Beachbody Coach Summit Day 1

Well, I arrived in Las Vegas late Wednesday night. After landing, getting my luggage, heading to the hotel,  checking in, and getting organized, I wasn't in bed until after 1:30am. That means that I was awake for around 24 consecutive hours on Wednesday. I was then up early Thursday morning, so after just 5 hours of sleep, I was off and running.

I first headed to find my way around this MASSIVE hotel (MGM Grand). I eventually found the convention centre and was able to register. From there, I walked around checking out the sights and everything Beachbody. I stood in line and waited to pick up a copy of Focus T25. I then headed off to find the Marquee Ballroom for the morning meeting with Coach Wayne and the rest of Team Ripped.

It was awesome to see Sagi Kalev at the training session, but what was even more amazing was finally meeting Coach Wayne in person. CW is a great guy, very genuine and down to earth, eager to help others!

I had to leave the Coach training early to head to my Body Beast photo shoot and interview. There, I was fitted for some clothing, had my makeup done, and did some pushups and tricep dips to pump up a bit to prepare for my photos. I went through a wide range of poses both clothed and topless, looking mean and smiling. I had lots of compliments from the staff at how well my photos turned out!

After the photo shoot I headed to a different room to do my interview. That was a bit of a nerve-racking experience, as I was in front of big, bright lighting, answering questions the best I could while Beachbody staffers watched from behind the camera. I definitely find speaking in front of my camera at home, producing my own Youtube videos to be a much more pleasant experience, hehe.  After my interview, I changed, grabbed some lunch, then headed back to the last bit of Coach training.

Once the training was done, I headed to "Core", which is essentially the tradeshow setup by Beachbody, where products are for sale. There, I was able to get my tshirt autographed by Tony Horton, I had a few minutes to speak with Steve Edwards, and also saw Shaun T's Q&A. It really was a pretty cool experience to those 3 all in such close proximity.

Later in the afternoon was Beachbody's first General Session. During this time, we were given a breakdown on Focus T25 from Shaun T himself. This also included news that Focus T25 will also have a "upgrade" package called "Gamma Phase", not to mention the inclusion of T25 in a Challenge Pack starting THIS Monday June 24th.

After that, and to the HUGE response from the crowd (I honestly didn't realize that this was as big of a request as it is) Vanilla Shakeology was revealed. Not only that, but Vanilla Shakeology will be available for purchase tonight at midnight (June 20th) and will be available in Challenge Packs starting Monday June 24th, starting with Focus T25!

Friday looks to be just as busy of a day, with training and workshops throughout the day. The big things I will be looking forward to, however, will be the Tony Horton workout at 7:15am, and day 2 of the General Session at 9am. Stay tuned for even more news tomorrow!

Weekly Newsletter

Hey Everybody

I hope you are all continuing to stay active and eating a respectable diet. Is there a goal or specific date that you have in mind that you are reaching for? I know that specific events help me train and stay focused on my goals. Maybe consider signing up for a fitness-related event. It doesn't have to involve running either. Look around for local events in your area. When you put the money down to sign up for an event, it definitely helps keep you motivated and on track to stay fit and active.

This week's topics:

1. Which brings me to my first point of the week. I have officially signed up for the World's Toughest Mudder 2013! That's right, I will be returning to Raceway Park in New Jersey for the 24-hour endurance event on Saturday November 16th 2013. It is a long way away, but my planning and preparation are starting as I write this e-mail. I will be discussing my plans and preparations over the coming weeks and months so stay tuned!

2. Today kicks off my 30-day Shakeology Challenge. Although you will be joining us a bit later, if you are still interested, let me know and I will add you to the group. The group is aiming to look and feel our best by the first official day of summer!

3. In case you missed it last week, Beachbody is now offering the Body Beast Challenge pack with Shakeology instead of the Body Beast supplements. I know a lot of people have been asking about this one (myself included) as I personally feel like this is a better deal and more worthwhile to sign up for. I am a huge fan of the Body Beast program, so if you are interested, let me know or check out the details here.

4. For those of you who are pumped for Focus T25, here is a snippet I received from someone last week:

"Tyler
Hope all is well. Tyler, i was part of the test group for this last summer. I have been doing beachbody programs the past 5 years, P90X, Insanity, Asylum, x2.

And this program totally rocked. And got to work out live with Shaun and Tania every morning for ten weeks.

But this program totally kicked ass. Legit. 25 minutes without a 30 second break. Weights, circuit, cardio, abs, legs. All of it is there. People will not be disappointed with it. Changed my whole view on long workouts."

5. Speaking of Focus T25, remember to check out my Focus T25 contest. There is less than a week left to earn as many entries as possible, increasing your chances of winning. I will be posting the winner of the contest via video next Tuesday May 28th on my Facebook page, so stay tuned for that. Also, keep an eye on my Facebook page, as you will have opportunities to earn bonus entries between now and the end of the contest!

6. Remember to check out our Team Fitness for Life accountability group for motivation and inspiration.

Hey Everybody!

Half-way through May. How is everyone's health/fitness goals coming? The official first day of summer is just over a month away, are you getting prepared to look/feel your best? I have never been one to promote a healthy lifestyle simply to look good, but so many people spend so much of their time uncomfortable in their own bodies, that it really does take away some of their enjoyment of the summer. What I'm saying is, you don't have to look like a supermodel, but you should certainly feel like one. When you feel better about yourself, your mood and how you perceive yourself goes through the roof!

Topics of interest this week:

1. Today is the last day to commit to my 30-day Shakeology Challenge. I would like all interested participants to place their order of Shakeology so that we can begin the Challenge no later than Wednesday May 22nd. That gives us a full 30 days of Shakeology goodness before the official first day of summer (Friday June 21st!)

2. My May "Win a copy of Shaun T's Focus T25" contest is still going strong! You have less than 2 weeks left to try and earn as many entries as you can to win an early copy of this program. Keep an eye out on my Facebook page over the next few weeks, I will be posting the link to the contest and asking people to "share" it to earn bonus entries into the contest. The more entries you earn, the better chance you have at winning!

3. This past Saturday, I completed my third Tough Mudder event. This time around my wife competed with me. It was cold, it was miserable, and it was TOUGH, but we made it. I am extremely proud of my wife, she did amazing, especially considering the conditions we competed in. For full details on the event, check out the blog link below.

4. For those of you who still haven't joined, make sure to check out our Facebook Accountability Group. We are now 46 members strong, with some amazing people staying motivated and accountable! This is a great way to stay motivated, accountable, and inspired to push play and stay active even on those days when you just don't feel like it!
